Moving your mail over to us

The Postal Service treats every kind of old address differently, and one of them can't be forwarded at all. Find the line below that matches where your mail goes today, then follow those steps. Whichever route you take, you'll also sign a PS Form 1583 with us before we can accept a single piece in your name — start it online and signing takes a couple of minutes at the counter.

A

Your mail comes to a house, apartment, or business street address

File a change of address, then tell your senders

This is the straightforward one. USPS will forward from a street address to your new mailbox here.

  1. Open your mailbox with us and complete Form 1583. You'll get your PMB number when your mailbox is set up at the counter.
  2. File a permanent change of address at usps.com, or ask any post office for a Mover's Guide and fill out PS Form 3575. Give it about two weeks' lead time — forwarding takes roughly 3 to 12 business days to start.
  3. List every name that gets mail at the old address. USPS forwards only the names written on the order, so a spouse, a second last name, or a business trading name each need to appear.
  4. Work through your senders. Forwarding buys you time; it isn't a permanent fix.
What forwarding actually covers Twelve months for First-Class and Priority, extendable another 6, 12, or 18 months for a fee. Periodicals stop after about 60 days. Marketing mail is never forwarded. Nothing from UPS, FedEx, or DHL is touched — those you update directly with each carrier.
B

Your mail comes to a USPS post office box

Same change of address, one extra thing to bring

Forwarding works from a PO Box exactly the way it works from a street address, on the same form and the same timeline.

  1. Open your mailbox with us and complete Form 1583.
  2. File the change of address from your box to your new PMB. Keep the old box open until forwarding is confirmed running.
  3. Don't simply close the box and walk away. A closed box with no order on file means your mail goes back to whoever sent it.
  4. When forwarding does expire, USPS spends six more months returning mail to senders with your new address printed on it, which is a last chance for anyone you missed.
Bring a physical address with you Form 1583 asks for your home or business address, and a PO Box can't be used in that space — it has to be a real physical address that matches your identification. A current lease, a home or vehicle insurance policy, a mortgage or deed, a vehicle registration, or a voter card will do it — utility bills aren't accepted. Sort this out before you come in and the whole thing takes ten minutes.
C

Your mail comes to another mailbox store or virtual mailbox

There's no forwarding order for this one

The Postal Service does not process a change of address out of a commercial mail receiving agency. No form exists for it, so this move runs on your old provider and on you.

  1. Open your mailbox with us and complete Form 1583. Your old form doesn't transfer — every agency keeps its own.
  2. Give your old provider written notice with a forwarding address. Once your service ends they're required to keep remailing your mail for six months rather than refusing it, though remailing costs new postage and they'll bill you for it.
  3. Hold both boxes for 30 to 60 days. Overlap is cheaper than a lost renewal notice.
  4. Update your senders one by one, starting with the list below. This is the whole mechanism here, not a backup to it.
Don't list the old mailbox as your address Form 1583 won't accept another mailbox service's address as your home or business address either. Same rule as a PO Box, same fix.
How to write your new address

Correct

YOUR NAME
7410 ESTATE BOVONI STE 5 PMB 000
ST THOMAS VI 00802

Your box number goes at the end of the street line, spelled PMB. Give this exact form to every sender.

Will be returned

YOUR NAME
7410 ESTATE BOVONI STE 5-000
ST THOMAS VI 00802

Our suite number and your box number can't be run together, "Apt" or "#" can't stand in for PMB, and mail arriving with no PMB at all goes back to the sender.

Bring with you

  • One photo ID, current and unexpired
  • A second document showing your physical address — a driver's license counts for only one of the two
  • Anyone 18 or over getting their own mail here — each adult signs their own Form 1583, with a $15 setup fee per person
  • Your children's names, if they get mail here. Children under 18 go on a parent's form and don't need their own ID
  • Your business documents, if the box is for a company

Names and addresses have to match your identification exactly. A middle initial on one document and not the other is enough to send an application back.

Tell these people yourself

  • Bank, credit union, and card issuers
